Hi 1A2,
Today's news is entitled:Malaysia thru Singapore's Eyes
It is from the New Strait Times Singapore!

WHILE the world is reeling from what is possibly the worst
global economic crisis since The Great Depression, most Malaysians
have been too preoccupied with its own political drama to pay much
attention to the financial meltdown.

Everyone is busy talking about politics. The opposition taking over, the
opposition not taking over; the PM stepping down, the PM not stepping down;
who will become the new PM's deputy, who will not; is Anwar guilty of sodomy,
is he innocent.

Based on the newspaper headlines, many seem to think that it only affects the
US, Europe, and other countries in the region. Malaysians tend to think that
based on strong commodities and crude oil prices that Petronas is selling, we
are somehow insulated from what is happening elsewhere.

Well, if they have been reading reports closely, they would see that palm oil
and crude oil prices have plunged also.

Local newspapers have not been reporting the meltdown on a big scale. The
coverage is still mainly limited to the business or foreign sections, and
tend to present the 'official' side of things.

In today's publication of The Star, the biggest English daily, a story on
local banks focused on the positives.

The lead story of the business section of The Star said that banks were turning cautious but have not put the brakes on lending to businesses.

It also stressed that the country's high savings rate and healthy foreign reserves would enable local banks to weather the global credit squeeze.

As a result, perhaps not many Malaysians are even aware of the spreading fear in global markets.

This sort of thinking is perhaps further boosted by the country's leaders who kept insisting that Malaysia's economic fundamentals are strong, rather than
preparing the ground for what is to come slower economic growth, and perhaps
job losses.

Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcob was quoted in today's papers as saying that Malaysia is unlikely to enter into a recession. He did admit however that "if the crisis creates a recession in the US and Europe,all countries will
be affected."

Mass-selling Malay-language Utusan Malaysia played up Nor Mohamed's comments and made it their lead story for the business pages, with the headline
saying "Malaysia confident will not fall into recession."

Quoting the central bank, the government has said that both direct and
indirect exposure of Malaysian financial institutions in terms of holding of securities linked to the US sub-prime mortgages and lending to entities
associated with them, accounted for only 0.3 per cent of the banking system's capital base.

Further supporting this argument is the fact that the Malaysian bourse also has not plunged to the depths seen by neighbouring Indonesia, which was forced to close for two days this week after huge falls.

But observers cautioned that Malaysians must pay careful attention to
events happening elsewhere before they end up being taken by surprise.

Some say this time, if the recession lands on Malaysian shores, it might
well be worse than the 1997-98 Asian Financial Crisis.

First to go could be Malaysian exports, 20 per cent of which go to the US. A drop in exports could cause major job losses. This would then affect consumer spending and curtail growth.

We are already seeing the prices of commodities fall, particularly fuel
and palm oil, two commodities which Malaysia depends on heavily for its
earnings. This could result in a vicious bite soon enough unless prices recover.

A big chunk of the Malaysian government annual revenue, about 46 per cent, comes from the petroleum funds. So falling oil prices could mean the government might have to crimp on building infrastructure and rural projects, like schools and drainage.

Also, many palm oil growers are rural Malays in the government-backed
Felda estates.During the Asian financial crisis, the sentiment against the government in the rural areas were negative because many growers found it tough to make ends meet.

And job losses jumped as electronics factories closed or pared operations.

All these means that, like it or not, whether they pay attention to it or not,
the global meltdown will soon enough knock on the doors of many Malaysians.

Learn the usage of grammar!
Thank You for your kind attention.
Regards,
Kush

Hi there,
Below are some Mathematics Problem Sums.The solutions for these sums will be posted below as well.
Questions:

1. Leon was given $100 for his weekly allowance.He spent 1/2 of it on meals,1/4 of it on books and 1/5 of it on recreation. How much could he save a week?

2. Daveen bought some computer accessories.He spent $150 on a hard drive, $95 on a thumbdrive, $19 on a mouse and $225 on a pair of speakers. How much money did he spend in total on the computer accessories?

3. There are 15 girls and 25 boys in class 1/A2. If there are 3 Malay girls,12 Chinese girls,15 Malay boys and 10 Chinese boys,express,

* (a) the number of girls to the number of boys in class 1/A2,
* (b) the number of boys as a ratio of the total number of students in class 1/A2 and
* (c) the number of Malay students as a ratio of the number of Chinese students in class 1/A2.

Solutions:

1.
* 1/2 x $100= $50(meals)
* 1/4 x $100= $25(books)
* 1/5 x $100= $20(recreation)
* $50 + $25 + $20=$95
* Amount saved:$100 - $95=$5

2.
* H.d=$150
* T.d=$95
* M.=$19
* P.of.S=$225
* Total amount spent=$150 + $95 + $19 + $225=$489

3.
* (a) Girls : Boys= 15:25=3:5
* (b) Boys:Total Students=25:(15 + 25)=25:40=5:8
* (c) Malay Students:Chinese Students=(15 + 3):(12 + 10)=18:22=9:11

That's all for today.
You may ask questions if you do not understand the topic.
You can also approach me if you are not sure of anything and i will try my best to help you by posting it.

Yours sincerely,
Kush

Hi 1A2,
I would like to share an article with you. It is from Yahoo!
The tittle is:Asia-Pacific's moves to shore up banks

SINGAPORE, Oct 14 - Australia and New Zealand gave a blanket
guarantee to all bank deposits on Sunday and Japan said it was
considering injecting funds into banks, the latest steps by authorities
worldwide to shore up the banking system.

Below is a summary of the measures taken by governments and
central banks in Asia to underpin their banking systems, as part of
efforts to tackle the world's worst financial crisis since the 1930s.

AUSTRALIA
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Oct. 12 his government
would guarantee Australia's entire deposit base of A$600-A$700 billion for
three years, guarantee wholesale bank funding, and make A$4 billion available
for mortgage-backed securities.

NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand's government said in tandem with its Australian neighbour it will guarantee all bank deposits in the country, but did not say how long its guarantee scheme will be in place.

INDIA
The central bank cut banks' cash reserve requirements, or the amount of funds
that banks have to hold with the central bank on deposit, by a hefty 150 basis points on Friday. That freed up $12 billion, which the central bank hopes will
prod banks to start lending to one another other.

CHINA
On Oct. 8, as part of China most aggressive monetary policy easing
this decade, the central bank announced a cut in the bank reserve ratio of 0.5 percentage point. It also cut its benchmark one-year bank lending and deposit
rates by 27 basis points.

It cut the lending rate on Sept. 15 for the first time since February 2002 and
also cut reserve requirements for most banks on the same date.

Regulatory and banking sources said this month the banking regulator had quietly urged medium-sized Chinese banks to boost their capital adequacy ratios above 10 percent by year end, compared with a minimum 8 percent required by existing rules.

HONG KONG
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority said on Sept. 30 it will provide more
liquidity to banks for six months, including expanding discount window
operations to include U.S. dollar assets.

JAPAN
Japan's central bank said on Sept. 29 it would double the size of a
swaps facility and extend the term of its U.S. dollar supply operations
to the end of April to ease strains in short-term funding markets.

The central bank also said it would increase the maximum aggregate
amount of the U.S. dollar swaps facility with the U.S. Federal Reserve
to $120 billion from $60 billion.

It is the first time in history that Japan's central bank is lending dollars,
and is part of a worldwide central bank effort to deal with strong dollar demand.

The finance minister said on Oct. 13 that Japan might also consider guaranteeing
all bank deposits. A day later, he said he was not thinking of this option at present.

The finance minister was asked by the prime minister on Oct. 14 to examine the revival of a law for injecting funds into regional banks, Kyodo news reported.

KOREA
The government said on Oct. 6 it would use the official foreign exchange
reserves to help boost banks' foreign currency liquidity.

Finance Minister Kang Man-soo was quoted as saying on Oct. 14 that the
government would consider guaranteeing local bank foreign currency debts and
raising government guarantees on bank deposits.

INDONESIA
On Oct. 9, Indonesia's central bank cut the reserve requirement for
banks to 7.5 percent from 9.08 percent, and eased accounting rules regarding
the fair value of assets, or mark-to-market, to help banks improve their balance sheets.
The central bank also said it is considering the possibility of raising the guaranteed level for bank deposits.

On Sept. 16, the central bank reduced the cost of overnight borrowing by 200 basis points to 10.25 percent to boost liquidity.

TAIWAN
The government said on Oct. 7 it will fully protect depositors at
local banks, possibly until the end of 2009.

The central bank cut its reserve requirement ratio for banks
on Sept. 16 to 5 percent from 5.75 percent to increase
liquidity in the banking system.

SINGAPORE
Singapore's central bank said it has increased liquidity in money markets
to meet funding needs. No details were available on the amount of liquidity
that was injected. (Reporting by Doug Young in Taipei, Andrew Torchia in
Shanghai, Mette Fraende in Sydney, Cheon Jong Woo in Seoul; Compiled by
Koh Gui Qing; Editing by Neil Fullick)

There are lots of words above that i'm sure 3/4 of the class won't know.
Words like liquidity and revival.
Supportively,
Kush

Hi 1A2,
I would like to share an article with you. It is from google.com!
The tittle is:Hurricanes and lizards are the least of your worries.

According to the National Weather Service, in late August and
early September of 1967, Hurricane Katrina crossed the tip of Baja California
and bounced its way up the Gulf of California toward Yuma.

Along the way it destroyed dozens of boats and about half the town of San Felipe
in Baja Norte.

It came to land at the mouth of the Colorado River, but it
was weakened by the mountains on either of side of the Gulf and hit Arizona
as a tropical depression. Two to 4 inches of rain fell
across southwest Arizona before the storm wore itself out.

Arizona's worst hurricane-related storm came on Labor Day 1970 when
the remains of Tropical Storm Norma hit central Arizona.

Twenty-three people were killed, including 14 who drowned in flash floods on
Tonto Creek near Kohl's Ranch.

At Workman Creek north of Globe, 11.4 inches of rain fell in 24 hours.

I am paranoid about lizards of any kind. I have been killing baby lizards
in my condo for weeks now. I've killed six and have seen one move faster than
I could react. The exterminators who handle our condo work do not have
any ideas for me. Do you?

Well, yes I do, but you probably won't like it. I think you should try to
relax and stop killing them. They're not going to hurt you, and they eat bugs.

Try trapping a lizard under a plastic cup. Slide a sheet of paper under the
cup to trap it and release the critter outside in peace.

Try to understand the story bit-by-bit!
Best regards,
Kush

Hi there 1A2,
Starting from today,i am going to post articles that may interest you.If you want to read it for free,just go to the following website(s)

Yahoo! Singapore - News
Well,today i am going to talk about the following article namely;"Some airlines will not survive global financial crisis:industry group".

Some airlines will not survive global financial crisis:industry group.
(AFP - Thursday, October 9)
Some airlines will not survive the worsening global economic situation, an industry association said
Wednesday, warning that the next 12-18 months will
be "extremely difficult" for Asia-Pacific carriers.

Passenger numbers are falling as Americans and Europeans curtail travel plans and the current financial market turmoil undermines
consumer confidence, the Association of Asia
Pacific Airlines (AAPA) said in a statement
monitored on its website.

"The biggest challenges right now are weakening
passenger demand, particularly for first and business
class travel, and continuing uncertainty about the
global economic outlook,"
AAPA director-general Andrew Herdman said.

"Asian carriers are therefore bracing themselves for
a period of continued turbulence, hopefully without
losing sight of their long term strategic goals and future
growth opportunities.

"The next 12-18 months will be extremely difficult times
for airlines and some won't survive the current crisis."

He added that the association "remains extremely
cautious about prospects for the airline industry in 2009."

While fuel prices have recently declined,
they are still 25 percent higher than last year, Herdman said.

The crisis, which began in the US subprime,
or higher-risk, mortgage sector, has been
routing global financial markets and there are signs
the impact is affecting other economic sectors such as manufacturing, tourism and property.

AAPA is a trade association of international airlines
based in the region, including Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Singapore Airlines
and Malaysia Airlines.

The other members are China Airlines,
Dragonair, EVA Air, Garuda Indonesia, Japan Airlines, Korean Air,
Philippine Airlines, Qantas Airways, Royal Brunei Airlines,
Thai Airways and Vietnam Airlines.

That's the news.

Hari Raya Puasa-Is a very important occasion that is celebrated by Muslims all over the world. It is also known as the festival that marks the end of one month of fasting. The words ‘Hari Raya’ mean 'day of celebration.' Many mistake Hari Raya Puasa for the Muslim New Year but it is not.

Ramadan

What is Ramadan? Ramadan is the name of the one-month fasting period when Muslims fast for a period of almost 12 hours. They fast from dawn till sunset. It is a known fact that during the period of fasting, apart from eating and drinking Muslims are also forbidden from smoking and having sexual relations. Only the sick are excused from fasting during this month. Muslims are expected to avoid lying, breaking promise or cheating during the month of Ramadan. The primary purpose of fasting during Ramadan is to remind all Muslims of self-control and submitting to Allah, the holy one. Even young kids are taught to fast when they are young.

Preparations

In a country like Singapore where there are a number of Muslims, Hari Raya preparations can be seen at least one month before the festival. Geylang Serai, the place that is known for the Muslims to gather, is always filled with large crowds during Ramadan. Bazaars would be set up and they would be selling numerous festive items for Muslims. Carpets, clothes, bags, food, music CDs, household items and VCDs would also be sold at Geylang. At night the place is lit up with glittering lights. There would also be a wide variety of food which would be sold at the fairs and they include kuehs, otah-otah, cakes, buns, breads, curry, noodles and even curry puffs. Most of the Muslims shop here to get the food to bring home to eat when they are breaking the fast. The time when the Muslims break the fast is usually around 7:15pm.

Celebrations

Celebration for Hari Raya Puasa starts at least a month ahead, during the fasting period of Ramadan. Women start to sew beautiful curtains and buy new clothes for the family. Some families also do renovation for the house so that the house would look better when the guests visit it during the festival. After fulfilling their one-month of fasting, the Muslims would be joyful to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa. On the morning of the festival, the Muslims would wear their new clothes and go to the mosque to pray. They offer their thanks to God and after that they would ask for forgiveness from their elders. This is an important custom followed by the Muslims.

They feel that the young ones asking forgiveness from their elders is very essential. On the day, they also visit their relatives and friends to celebrate the happy occasion. If you visit Muslims' homes on Hari Raya Puasa you can expect to taste a wide variety of delicious spicy dishes. Some favorite dishes that can be found in Muslims homes on this special occasion are ketupat, lontong, nasi padang and beef rendang. The Muslims also have the habit of giving packets of money to kids when they go visiting. The packets are usually be in green color and children often look forward to getting these money tokens on Hari Raya Puasa. Overall, Hari Raya Puasa is a delightful festival for the Muslims.
